ARTos House presents Los Angeles-based vocalist and composer Odeya Nini and sound-theatre duo Physical Plastic (Yiannis Christofides and Kestrel Farin Leah) in An Evening of Interdisciplinary Vocal Performance.

A SOLO VOICE, composed and performed by Odeya Nini, is an investigation of resonance, extended vocal techniques, performance, and pure expression, exploring the relationship between mind and body and the various landscapes it can yield.
The work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations aiming to dissociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but seen through movement and action.
Odeya will be performing pieces from her recently released album ODE, recognized as a notable recording of 2022 by The New Yorker Magazine.
The evening will open with Cyprus-based Physical Plastic, performing Lullaby for a traveler.
Composer Yiannis Christofides reworks texts from Physical Plastic’s experimental theatre work ALARM, presented in Los Angeles by REDCAT Studio, Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (2017) and Los Angeles Nomadic Division (2018).
Using security alarms and the ancient Greek Sirens as points of departure, the work questions boundaries, ownership and power as observed both locally and in the geopolitical scene—performing ideas of need, limit and transgression and implicating us in questions of difference, desire, and law.
Lullaby for a traveller responds to the rapid gentrification of our migrant neighborhood, while contemplating freedom of movement as an ideal in the face of forced displacement.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
ODEYA NINI is a Los Angeles based interdisciplinary vocalist and composer.
At the locus of her interests are performance practices, gesture, textural harmony, tonal animation, and the illumination of minute sounds, in works spanning chamber music to vocal pieces and collages of musique concrète.
Her solo vocal work extends the dimension and expression of the voice and body, creating a sonic and physical panorama of silence to noise and tenderness to grandeur.
Odeya's work has been presented at venues and festivals across the US and internationally, such as The LA Phil, Merkin Concert Hall, The Broad Museum, and MONA from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv, Australia, Mongolia, Madagascar and Vietnam.
Her performance of I See You was included in the The New Yorker’s 10 notable performances of 2021.
She leads vocal sound baths, workshops and retreats exploring the transformative and healing qualities of embodying the voice.
Odeya holds a BFA from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and an MFA in composition from California Institute of the Arts.
PHYSICAL PLASTIC—aka composer/sound artist Yiannis Christofides and performer/director Kestrel Farin Leah—creates theatre at the intersection of theatricality and artistic action.
Their work is driven by a reciprocal dramaturgical rhythm with autobiography at the center, where the performance is a vessel for the multifaceted performer’s political and creative interests.
At the core of their work is the physical performer, who is able to respond to the possibilities of the stage with a spatial and sensual expressivity that reveals new relations of sound, gesture and voice.
A young collaboration, they have been resident artists at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center, and received a New Music USA award for their work Alarm.
In Los Angeles, they presented work at the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theatre, and collaborated with public art organization LAND.

Το A SOLO VOICE, που συνέθεσε και ερμήνευσε η Odeya Nini, είναι μια έρευνα για την αντήχηση, τις εκτεταμένες φωνητικές τεχνικές, την ερμηνεία και την καθαρή έκφραση.
Εξερευνώντας τη σχέση ανάμεσα στο μυαλό και το σώμα και τα διάφορα τοπία που μπορεί να αποδώσει.
Το έργο είναι μια σειρά από εύπλαστες συνθέσεις και αυτοσχεδιασμούς με στόχο να αποσυνδέσει τη φωνή από τα παραδοσιακά της χαρακτηριστικά και να δημιουργήσει μια νέα λογική του τραγουδιού που όχι μόνο ακούγεται αλλά και φαίνεται μέσα από την κίνηση και τη δράση.
Η Odeya θα ερμηνεύσει κομμάτια από το άλμπουμ ODE που κυκλοφόρησε πρόσφατα, το οποίο αναγνωρίστηκε ως αξιόλογη ηχογράφηση του 2022 από το περιοδικό New Yorker.
Η βραδιά θα ανοίξει με τους Physical Plastic με έδρα την Κύπρο, οι οποίοι θα ερμηνεύσουν το Lullaby for a traveler.
Ο συνθέτης Γιάννης Χριστοφίδης επεξεργάζεται κείμενα από το πειραματικό θεατρικό έργο ALARM των Physical Plastic, που παρουσιάστηκε στο Λος Άντζελες από το REDCAT Studio, το Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (2017) και το Los Angeles Nomadic Division (2018).
Χρησιμοποιώντας τους συναγερμούς ασφαλείας και τις αρχαίες ελληνικές Σειρήνες ως σημεία εκκίνησης, το έργο θέτει ερωτήματα για τα όρια, την ιδιοκτησία και την εξουσία -παρουσιάζοντας τις ιδέες της ανάγκης, του ορίου και της υπέρβασης και εμπλέκοντάς μας σε ζητήματα διαφοράς, επιθυμίας και νόμου.
Το Lullaby for a traveller ανταποκρίνεται στον ταχύτατο εξευγενισμό της μεταναστευτικής μας γειτονιάς, ενώ παράλληλα εξετάζει την ελευθερία της μετακίνησης ως ιδανικό μπροστά στον αναγκαστικό εκτοπισμό.

ODEYA NINI είναι μια διεπιστημονική τραγουδίστρια και συνθέτης με έδρα το Λος Άντζελες.
Στο επίκεντρο των ενδιαφερόντων της βρίσκονται οι πρακτικές ερμηνείας, η χειρονομία, η υφολογική αρμονία, η τονική εμψύχωση και ο φωτισμός των μικροσκοπικών ήχων.
Το σόλο φωνητικό της έργο επεκτείνει τη διάσταση και την έκφραση της φωνής και του σώματος, δημιουργώντας ένα ηχητικό και φυσικό πανόραμα από τη σιωπή στον θόρυβο και από την τρυφερότητα στο μεγαλείο.
Το έργο της Odeya έχει παρουσιαστεί σε χώρους και φεστιβάλ στις ΗΠΑ και διεθνώς.
Η ερμηνεία της στο I See You συμπεριλήφθηκε στις 10 αξιοσημείωτες παραστάσεις του 2021 του The New Yorker.
Οι PHYSICAL PLASTIC δημιουργούν θέατρο στη διασταύρωση της θεατρικότητας και της καλλιτεχνικής δράσης.
Το έργο τους κινείται από έναν αμοιβαίο δραματουργικό ρυθμό με την αυτοβιογραφία στο επίκεντρο.
Μια νέα συνεργασία, έχουν υπάρξει μόνιμοι καλλιτέχνες στο Watermill Center του Robert Wilson και έχουν λάβει βραβείο New Music USA για το έργο τους Alarm.
