Performance Design Futures 2025 will take place at ARTos House in Nicosia from 21 to 23 February 2025. It is an international academic symposium organised by CYCSTAT, the Cyprus Centre of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians. This international symposium builds on Performance Design Futures 2022, aiming to generate dialogue between key performance designers and performing arts practitioners on issues concerning the southern Mediterranean region and the Middle East, particularly in the context of conflict and displacement.

The keynote speakers joining this year are: Dr Dorita Hannah (NZ), independent academic; Professor Pamela Howard, OBE; and Dr Sofia Pantouvaki (FI/GR), Aalto University.

The theme of this edition is: Scenographies of the Here and Now: Navigating Conflict, Division, and Displacement. During this three-day symposium, participants will explore scenographic practices in relation to conflict, displacement, and collective memory. In the 21st century, conflict and division continue to influence various aspects of public and artistic life, and as conflicts escalate in the Middle East and Europe, they become a central point of reference. New forms of participation, protest, and solidarity have challenged institutional structures. The arts not only highlight crises and divisions but also explore ways to build communities through shared values and social models.

Discussions will focus on: Scenographies of care and resistance; Borders, Boundaries, Edges; Theatre in conflict zones, refugee camps and other areas of displacement; Dramaturgies of memory; Dramaturgies of conflict-inflicted spaces; Embodied materialities; Investigative scenography and forensic architecture; Political acts of scenography; Objects and materialities of war.

Press release in Greek: Το Κυπριακό Κέντρο Σκηνογράφων, Αρχιτεκτόνων και Τεχνικών Θεάτρου (CYCSTAT) διοργανώνει το 3ήμερο Συμπόσιο Performance Design Futures 2025 στο ARTos House, στη Λευκωσία, από 21 μέχρι 23 Φεβρουαρίου 2025. Το διεθνές Συμπόσιο αποτελεί εν μέρει συνέχεια του Performance Design Futures 2022, και έχει ως στόχο τη δημιουργία διαλόγου μεταξύ σκηνογράφων, ακαδημαϊκών και επαγγελματιών παραστατικών τεχνών για θέματα που αφορούν την περιοχή της νότιας Μεσογείου και της Μέσης Ανατολής σε σχέση με τις έννοιες της σύγκρουσης (conflict) και του εκτοπισμού (displacement).

Το θέμα του φετινού Συμποσίου, που θα διεξαχθεί στην αγγλική γλώσσα, είναι Scenographies of the Here and Now: Navigating Conflict, Division, and Displacement.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του Συμποσίου θα διερευνηθούν σκηνογραφικές πρακτικές σε σχέση με τη σύγκρουση, τον εκτοπισμό και τη συλλογική μνήμη, μέσα από τοποθετήσεις και παρουσιάσεις από επαγγελματίες και ακαδημαϊκούς από Κύπρο, Ελλάδα, Ρουμανία, Λίβανο κ.ά. Οι συγκρούσεις και οι διχασμοί συνεχίζουν να επηρεάζουν την καλλιτεχνική και δημόσια ζωή, ενώ καθώς οι συγκρούσεις στη Μέση Ανατολή και Ευρώπη κλιμακώνονται, αποτελούν πλέον κεντρικό σημείο αναφοράς. Οι τέχνες έχουν τη δυνατότητα όχι μόνο να αναδεικνύουν κρίσεις αλλά και να διερευνούν τρόπους οικοδόμησης κοινοτήτων μέσω κοινών αξιών.

Θεματικοί άξονες: Σκηνογραφίες φροντίδας και αντίστασης; Σύνορα – Όρια – Άκρα; Θέατρο σε ζώνες συγκρούσεων και προσφυγικούς χώρους; Δραματουργία της μνήμης; Σωματοποιημένες υλικότητες; Ερευνητική σκηνογραφία και αρχιτεκτονική; Πολιτικές πράξεις σκηνογραφίας; Αντικείμενα και υλικά του πολέμου.
